The History of Spaghetti and Meatballs.

Hello, today I am writing about spaghetti and meatball’s origin.

Most people believe if you travel to Italy you can find this meal but you probably won’t find it on a menu.

While it mostly known as an Italian dish, spaghetti and meatballs did not come from Italy.

Italy has their own version of meatballs, but they’re highly different than the type you’reprobably familiar with. They’re called Polpettes and are mainly eaten without spaghetti. Polpettes are made with turkey and fish. That makes me sad because I am vegan and I don’t eat animals. I really love vegan meatballs.

Spaghetti originates from when Italian Immigrants came to the Good ol’ U S of A in 1880-1920. Most of the Immigrants were in poverty and had been spending 70-80% of their income on food. In comparison Americans at this time only spent 25% of their income on food. As meat became readily available, families put more meatballs on the table.

The sauce came later in the USA. “Sailor Sauce” dominated American-Italian meals because canned tomatoes were one of the only type you could buy at local grocery stores. The sauce originates from a place called Naples and comes from the Italian word ‘marinaro’ meaning sailor.

Spaghetti also became really popular in the good ol’ U S of A because it was inexpensive.

Not too long after people began eating the spaghetti, the meatballs, and the marinara together.

This is the end of the blog. I hope you enjoyed this blog because now I am really hungry for spaghetti and vegan meatballs and you probably are as well. If you’re not then tell me your secrets because that seems impossible.
